Special art from Olympic hosts
At the Canadian Olympic Team’s home-base at the main press centre in the Olympic Park, there is something a little extra special hanging on the wall.
Hanging beside pictures of the famous Olympic champions who mean so much to Canada is a piece of art given to the Team from Lucy Roberts, an 11-year-old from Bournemouth in Dorset, U.K.
The colourful piece of a sailboat racing on the water has one message: “Welcome to Great Britain”.
Welcome, indeed.
In fact, each National Olympic Committee received its own creation from area schoolchildren — 204 kids who had the opportunity to give a personal gift to a country they may never heard of.
The sentiment had such an impact on Canadian Olympic Team Chef de Mission Mark Tewksbury, he wrote Lucy a note:
“Thanks so much for your beautiful uplifting drawing,” wrote Tewksbury. “It brightened up our media office and we hope you enjoy watching the Olympics.”
The idea for the project is part of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympics Games’ 2012 Get Set Education programme. The goal is to get children and young people from Great Britain excited and inspired about the Games.
