Canadians to Catch – Day 16

Your Canadian Olympic Team
The Canadian Olympic Team will march in the Closing Ceremonies, which begin at 4 p.m. EST at Olympic Stadium, with music orchestrated by the London Symphony Orchestra. London will hand over hosting honours to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Games and the Olympic Flame will extinguish.

Mountain Biking
Coming back for his third Olympic Games, Geoff Kabush of Courtenay, BC and fellow Vancouver Islander Max Plaxton of Victoria, BC hit the Olympic Trails at Hadleigh Farm this morning. Start time is 8:30 a.m EST.

Marathon
Canada has three athletes competing in the marathon Sunday at 6am EST and hopes are high that one will break the longest standing Canadian record, set 36 years ago by Jerome Drayton with a time of 2:10:09. “These boys are ready,” said High Performance Chief, Martin Goulet. With the fastest time coming into the event, Dylan Wykes, of Kingston, ON ran the second fastest Canadian marathon this year in 2:10:47. Wykes will be joined on the start-line by Reid Coolsaet of Hamilton, ON and Eric Gillis of Antiganoush, NS.

Modern Pentathlon
Starting off with fencing at 3 a.m. EST, Donna Vakalis of Toronto, ON and Melanie McCann of Clinton, ON, compete in the Modern Pentathlon. At a more decent hour for Canadian viewers, the women compete in swimming at 7:35 a.m. EST, in riding at 9:35 a.m. EST and round out the day with the combined event that consists of a 3km run with shooting points at 1 p.m. EST.

Wrestling
In the last of the men’s wrestling, Haislan Garcia of Coquitlam, BC, is hitting the mats at his second Olympic Games, competing in the men’s 66kg class. Garcia competes in the qualification round at 3:30 a.m. EST. In his first Olympic competition, Khetag Pliev will take on the 96kg men at 4 a.m. EST. The men hope to join their female teammates, Carol Huynh and Tonya Verbeek, on the podium.
