Canadian Olympic Team ready to march in Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony

Go buy some extra coffee, book a few days off work, charge up your iPhone and find the hours of your local bar.

The Sochi Winter Olympic Games are here. Events are often early, but always exciting and at Olympic.ca, totally covered from start to finish. We won’t sleep, even if you have to a little.

Before Canada’s athletes even step one foot into Fisht Olympic Stadium tonight, they’ll have a lifetime of work behind them. No joke, it’s staggering. From insane triple corks to perfect curls, it’s all about individuals giving their life to sport.

And it’s not about the show. It seems. It’s not even about the getting there. From the beginning, it’s more about excellence.

Canadian athletes share what it’s like to join the Canadian Olympic Team:

And Canada is not here for the participation ribbon. Hayley Wickenheiser will carry the flag, a four-time Olympic medallist leading the march. Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Aubut has made it clear, “We aim for the medal number one – it’s an ambitious goal, but we Canadians like it this way,” he said at Canada’s opening press conference yesterday.

“We’re not there to participate, we’re there to win.” – Marcel Aubut, COC President

And Canada has a shot. Despite stiff competition from Germany, Norway, Russia and the United States among others. However, the very best athletes at an Olympic Winter Games all have a supreme intensity, and the fortitude developed by being children on winter.

Canadians are no different. For many, it has been a long road to Russia. Tonight, they will get a chance to pause and recognize the achievement. And they should. Excellence is why the world pays attention, and because we admire the struggle, but hope with all our hearts for the joy.

And we hope you’ll watch with us. Our writers, reporters, photographers and social media team are here to give you the most unique, all-access look at the Games.

History will be made in 2016 when Rio de Janeiro, Brazil hosts the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, marking the first time that a South American country will welcome the world to an Olympic Games. It is also just the third time that the Games will be held in the southern hemisphere, following Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000.
